5.9.10 The Sky Is Falling

That's sure what it sounded like some time after midnight last night, when this tree came crashing down onto our little barn. We were just drifting off to sleep when we heard a few strange squeaks that we thought might be some new sort of nocturnal visitor. (In retrospect, I think it was the straining of the wood before it split.) It was windy last night, powerful gusts blowing in the rogue snow showers predicted for early this morning. Suddenly there was a loud wrenching thud, the sound of damage. G went racing out with the night-vision goggles and reported back that a major tree was down. In the morning we were greeted with this grim aftermath...

ouch
Split 790 xxx
apparently it was just part of this enormous pine on the property behind ours
Branches 790 xxx
it fell across the roof of the barn and scattered branches everywhere
Insidebarn 790 xxx
branches penetrated the roof in several spots and inside is evidence of the force
Because of the cold weather predictions, G had spent yesterday afternoon jerry-rigging a cold frame over our newly planted lettuces. I am sad, but grateful it happened now and not later in the season when the garden will be in full swing.

Hopefully this will be it for things that go bump in the night...

SO sorry about the damage! Glad it didn't hit your home. Maybe that huge bear was sleeping in that tree and won't be back again.

I'm just so glad I live in the city where I never have to worry about things that go bump in the night or large object crashing down on my head or loud explosions as I'm drifting off to sleep or...hey, wait a minute?!

Night Vision Goggles?!?! That's awfully sophisticated country living. Anyway, glad you and George are okay. And what of the lettuces? Will they survive? Don't think I can wait until "later in the season" to find out...

I agree with Lisa about those goggles! Those pines are dangerous. Bet you'll not get the neighbors to bear any expense! Surprisingly, the interior escaped total loss. Glad no one was staying the night.

We'll let our insurance companies duke it out! There is actually a family of red squirrels living in the soffit behind the downed gutter, but we're pretty sure they're all unscathed.
